I don’t know how I managed to survive the past 9 years without the Shu Uemura eyelash curler.
Actually I had it before, it was my very first eyelash curler and I bought it because everyone said it was good. It was extremely expensive to a poor student like me back then (it is still now!) but I thought there must be a reason why everyone swears by it, so I scrimped and saved for it. My eyelashes went from *hmm* to *WOW!* the first time I used the Shu Uemura eyelash curler. But we humans never appreciate the things in our lives and think that the grass is always greener on the other side.
On the other side of the fence I went and what ensued were years of 90 degrees eyelashes, pinched eyelids, fallen eyelashes (UGH!) and probably damaged eyelashes from all that crimping. Think how regular straightening damages your hair. =(
Because I didn’t have anything to compare the Shu Uemura eyelash curler with, it was hard to make a good judgment of what was the ‘best’. So I thought hey, let’s get out there and try other curlers.
AND I FREAKING THREW MY SHU UEMURA EYELASH CURLER AWAY.
I’ve tried so many different brands of eyelash curlers. Brandless ones from SASA, Watson’s inhouse brand, brandless ones from brandless shops, The BodyShop one, Sephora one, heated lash curlers, even Shu Uemura's constantly compared to counterpart - the Shiseido one.
Man, the Shiseido Eyelash Curler didn’t work for me at all. It claims to be ‘ideal for Asian eyes and eyes that are not too round. It will not poke or pinch the skin’, but all these it did! I suffered from painfully pinched lids all the time when I tried sticking to the Shiseido Eyelash Curler. And the corner lashes always stuck out like stubborn baby hair. And because the corner lashes stuck out like stubborn baby hair, the corners of my lower lashline always got smeared with mascara. The horrors! I dare say applying mascara is second nature to me (Read: 5 common mascara mistakes) but I always, always, always had trouble crimping my lashes with the oddball eyelash curlers even though I have reasonable eyelash length.
I scouted and scouted and scouted. And wasted tonnes of money.
I guess I was trying to find The One.
And then one day last year I felt had enough of traveling the world, and decided that my first love gave me the best time of my (eyelashes) life. So I went to buy the Shu Uemura Eyelash Curler and since then, there’s no looking back. No makeup look is complete without this beauty tooland my peepers couldn't be prettier without it.

One annoying thing is that Shu Uemura doesn’t sell the curler refill pads on their own, which kinda sucks because it comes with only 1 refill. They want us to change the pads every 6 months, so the eyelash curler should last just about a year. Then you can either dig into your pocket to get another or use the refills from other *cough*Shiseido*cough* brands!

I've used mine for more than a year and haven't felt the need to change the pad. It still crimps very well, the hold is sturdy, the pad is tough. I believe the Shu Uemura Eyelash Curler was engineered to last a long time!
